Spaceflight is currently experiencing dramatic advances and changes: Large constellations of small satellites are providing the infrastructure for a global “Internet of Things”, satellites are becoming more compact and intelligent, but also less expensive. In this strategic field of technology, which is developing extremely rapidly, it is essential to join forces in research in order to survive in international competition. For this reason, the European Space Agency (ESA) is setting up a network of joint research laboratories in important areas with a promising future. The ESA_Lab@ZfT in Würzburg builds on the micro-satellite and telematics technologies of the ZfT and will further develop exciting future space topics in close cooperation with ESA’s European Space Operations Center (ESOC) in Darmstadt, where the European satellites are usually operated. The cooperation agreement was signed by ESA Director General Aschbacher and ZfT Executive Board member Prof. Dr. Schilling.
