In-Orbit Formation Tests as a first step towards Internet of Space

The aim of the ForTe project is to launch and operate a network of four micro-satellites into orbit. This will enable and conduct experiments on formation control and inter-satellite communication. These experiments will provide important data to optimize future “Internet of Space” applications.

Project content

The ForTe project is to build on the “NetSat” research project and make use of its preliminary work. Within NetSat, four CubeSats for a formation will be developed and built with the corresponding algorithms and technologies. ForTe now enables the launch and operation of the four satellites, as well as the execution of important experiments. This will be the first time worldwide that a satellite formation consisting of four satellites will be operated in orbit. Significant new scientific findings are expected here, as formation experiments with four satellites in three dimensions can be carried out for the first time. In “NetSat” the corresponding satellite development work was carried out and the prerequisites for an in-orbit demonstration were created, which is now to be carried out in ForTe and which will be of great benefit for the further development of technologies for “Internet of Space” applications.

Project Duration

01/2019 – 12/2019 (1 year)

Funding

This project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.
